CASHMERE CARE
Cashmere is a fine, delicate natural fibre known for its incredible softness and warmth. It’s the perfect investment piece; versatile, comfortable and luxurious. To maintain the quality and appearance of your cashmere, special care is required. There are several ways to care for cashmere. Here’s what you need to know;
Dry Cleaning / Washing
Cashmere should be washed as little as possible to preserve its properties. Dry cleaning
is generally the preferred way to clean your cashmere to ensure it is properly cared for.
If you’re looking for a more environmentally friendly option, you may decide to hand
wash. If you are washing your cashmere by hand then do so in cold water with a small
amount of mild detergent suited for delicate wool, such as Attire Care’s Delicate Wash.
Avoid twisting or rubbing the fabric and gently rinse the garment until the water runs
clear. Once clean the garment can be rolled in a sponge-towel to help remove excess
water before drying. Always make sure that you read the care label and follow
the individual cleaning instruction for the garment.
Drying
Always dry your cashmere flat, so that it keeps its shape. Dry away from direct sunlight
and heat sources. This will preserve its fibre and colour. Do not put your cashmere
garments in a dryer as this will cause them to shrink.
Ironing
When your garment is dry it can be ironed inside-out using a warm iron. Always use a
clean lightly dampened cloth between the iron and the fabric. It is recommended that
you don’t iron garment edges such as collars and sleeves so that they retain their
elasticity.
Piling
It is normal for a cashmere garment to produce some piling which will begin to
disappear after a few washes. Piling can also be removed gently by hand or with a
cashmere comb. To comb your cashmere, lay your garment flat and lightly brush the
comb over the surface, wherever you see pills forming. Be careful not to press too hard,
as you could damage the fibres.
Holes
If you discover a hole in your cashmere, get it fixed quickly. If you keep wearing the
piece, the hole will get bigger making it harder to repair to a high standard.
Storage
Cashmere knits should be folded flat and can be placed in a breathable canvas
garment bag for even more protection. For extra freshness, spray with Cashmere spray
before storing for long periods of time. Lastly, beware of moths, as they are very fond of
cashmere.
