PICTURE THIS // MICHIEL KEUPER

Visual composer Michiel Keuper is like a treasure hunter, combing out of print books and obscure magazines, physical archives and online sources to find the perfect image. It's what gives his Instagram account @MichielKeuper such dimension and depth. A trained fashion designer, Michiel and fellow designer Francisco van Benthum had their own fashion label, KEUPR/van BENTM, which showed at Paris Fashion Week before Michiel began teaching and exploring other creative outlets.

"I coined the term 'visual composer' to give a sense of my work, which has become increasingly cross-disciplinary and therefore not always so easy to pinpoint. What links my disparate works however is their visual nature, and that I'm composing images in the broadest sense; whether I create fragmented fashion designs like I used to do in my Paris years, paint an image on a T-shirt or a canvas, create a spatial proposal for a dance performance, or curate images on my Instagram account."

"I am fascinated by the juxtaposition of composition, colour, material, content or atmosphere. The moment when single components add up and create something new, something unexpected. The moment when 1 + 1 becomes 3, when the sum is greater than its parts."

"One of my favourite books is a facsimile reprint of Hannah Höch's 'Album' from 1933, where she magnificently presents collected imagery. Inspired by her work I made collage books as well. In fact my Instagram account has become a digital version of that same idea. I bring images in dialogue with each other."
