THE ART OF KNITWEAR

It all started with the knit; the cardigan stitch of a sweater that JOSEPH founder Mr.Ettedgui spotted on his daughter's
school uniform. Using international craftsmen this everyday garment was turned into fine knitwear for London's style
conscious women, becoming a founding garment for the JOSEPH collection — a signature still to this day.

Once techniques are fully understood they can be subverted, and for Autumn/Winter 2016 the making of such knitwear is turned radically upside-down. Floating yarns and free-form, almost painterly, motifs bring an intimacy to the hand-knit sweater. An assembly of badges and patches are whipstitched randomly onto heavyweight wool cardigans that are rounded in form and cropped in length.

The corset, one of fashion's most loaded garments, proves an unlikely source of inspiration as cleverly engineered seams and pointelle details cinch sweaters and knit dresses. Elsewhere, odd fastenings, exaggerated lengths and trailing threads personalise these wardrobe classics: the sign of a true eclectic.
